Living Fit with Hemophilia: Channeling Energy with Music By Corey Pierce

Corey Pierce profile

Music often is an overlooked way to improve any routine activity, including your workout as a person living with hemophilia.

Whenever I'm exercising for longer than 10 minutes, I make sure to bring my mp3 player. By playing some up-beat jams, it helps to get my mind and body in sync. Listening to fast dance music can help get your legs pumping and blood moving throughout your body. To me, there is nothing quite like '80s music in this regard! Music can also make the resting periods between exercises a lot more bearable so you don't lose focus as easily.

The gym where I work out does play music through the loudspeakers, but it's rarely something I want to hear. So, make sure you have some snug fitting ear buds when listening to your tunes. This can help cancel out ambient sounds, so you can focus on your technique instead of the person next to you. Just remember not to turn the volume up too loud.

I also like to match music genres to my activity. I prefer the following:

  • Stretching: Classical music because it's soothing and relaxing.
  • Running: Dance music because it's energetic and has a consistent beat to keep you going.
  • Weight Lifting: Mellow rock because it's calm and collected.
  • Cool Down: Reggae because I think nothing gets you relaxed quite like its rhythm.

Making a playlist is also fun considering you get to set the tone and energy of your workout by simply picking some songs. Just make sure it's music that YOU like! You should also use only legally approved downloading procedures.

Here's a workout playlist that I made recently*.

  1. Eye of the Tiger (Rocky Theme Song) by Survivor
  2. D.A.N.C.E. by Justice
  3. Thriller by Michael Jackson
  4. Just Dance by Lady Gaga
  5. Baba O'Riley by The Who
  6. Genesis by Justice
  7. Walk This Way by Aerosmith & Run-DMC
  8. Beat It by Michael Jackson
  9. TNT by AC/DC
  10. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk

ENJOY!
